The honest brief

Greece is two trips trying to be one. There is mainland Greece — Athens, the Peloponnese, the north — which is historical, intense, and not the Greece on Instagram. And there are the islands, which are what most travelers booked, and which are themselves wildly different from each other (Santorini is one type of trip, Crete is a different type, the Sporades are a third). A 10-day first trip that does Athens 3 nights + two contrasting islands is the shape that works.

Santorini is real and is also a trap. The famous Oia caldera-edge is half-Instagram-set; the prices are New York prices in a town that was a fishing village in 1980. Naxos, Milos, Folegandros, or Tinos give you a Cycladic island without the cruise-ship surge. First-time Cyclades travelers who go to one of those and skip Santorini regret nothing.

When to visit

May, June, September, early October are the windows. July and August are very hot and very crowded — the islands are at their maximum, ferry tickets are scarce, and Athens hits 38°C with the Acropolis closing at 1 PM for safety. Mid-October the water is still 22°C on Crete; everything has emptied out.

Winter is mainland Greek time — Athens museums, Meteora monasteries in snow, Thessaloniki food without the heat. Most islands shut down October through April.

Money

Card pays for most things now; the days of cash-only Greece are fading. Smaller tavernas in island villages, the peripteros (kiosk), and the bakery are still cash. Tipping €1–€2 per person for a meal; rounding the taxi.

Athens has functional pickpocket teams on the metro (especially Line 1, Monastiraki to Piraeus) — front-pocket the phone. The 'free' room transfer offered at the ferry port to Santorini/Mykonos is often a slow shared van with mandatory shopping stops; the official taxi is cheaper end-to-end.

Food + dining etiquette

Greek meals are slow on purpose. A 9 PM dinner reservation means the table is yours for the night. Sharing is default — order four or five mezze for the table and one main per two people. The house wine in a copper jug is usually fine and is what locals drink; you don't need the €40 bottle of Assyrtiko unless you're specifically chasing it.

Souvlaki is the cheap eat — €4 for a wrapped pita that is dinner. Tzatziki is yogurt and cucumber; the bad version is the watery one from a tub. Spanakopita and bougatsa are bakery items, breakfast or snack.

Speaking the language

Greek looks intimidating because of the alphabet but the polite moves transfer fast. Yia sas (formal/plural hello), kalimera (good morning), kalispera (good afternoon-evening), efcharistó (thank you) — parakaló is please AND you're welcome AND go ahead, context decides.

Don't talk about the 1967–74 junta unless someone else starts it; feelings are still live. The Macedonia naming dispute (with North Macedonia) was resolved diplomatically in 2018 but the feelings aren't; don't engage.

What to pack

Sturdy walking shoes — the Acropolis is marble, polished by 2.5 million tourists a year, and is genuinely slippery. Cycladic villages are cobblestone-and-step; leave the wheeled suitcase with the porter at the bottom. Modesty for monasteries (Meteora lends wraps but they're hot). Real sunblock — Greek sun reflects off limestone and the sea simultaneously.

Getting around

Athens metro + the historic tram are fine. Ferries are how you move between islands — Blue Star, Hellenic Seaways, Aegean Speed Lines. The slow ferry (Blue Star) is cheaper, longer, has a deck you can sit on with a beer; the fast catamaran is double the price and indoors. Book at least a week ahead in summer.

Domestic flights from Athens to Crete or Santorini are 45 minutes and beat the 8h ferry — especially for a short trip. Renting a car on Crete, Naxos, or the Peloponnese unlocks 90% of the country; Athens itself, no, parking is the punishment.

Where to actually go

One week: Athens 3 + Naxos 2 + Santorini 2 (or substitute Milos for Santorini). Ten days: Athens + Crete (the island is big enough to need a week). Two weeks: Athens + a Peloponnesian loop (Nafplio, Mystras, the Mani) + 4 islands. Skip first trip: Mykonos (party-island; you know if you want it), Corfu (great but Italian-influenced, different texture), the Cyclades in August (too much).

Common mistakes

Doing Athens in one day on the way to the islands — the Acropolis Museum + the Plaka neighborhood + a sunset dinner with a view needs two full days minimum. Going to Santorini for one night. Eating at any restaurant in central Plaka with a tout-host out front waving a menu. Renting a car in Athens.

Notes for the diaspora

Greek-American diaspora is heavy and proud — if your yia yia is from the Mani peninsula or Smyrna (now Izmir, Turkey), the regional food and the family stories are very specific. Many Greek-American families keep a baptismal village and a 'where we actually live' city; visiting the baptismal village is the diaspora-completing move.
