The August 8, 1956 Marcinelle mine disaster

at the Bois du Cazier coal mine in southern Charleroi killed 262 miners in a fire caused by a coal wagon accidentally severing electrical and compressed-air pipes 975 m below the surface, igniting oil and rubber.
