Best Brunch Reservation Apps in Canada

Most people do not realize: OpenTable owns the Canadian market, but Resy and local apps often have better availability at trendy spots. The app you choose depends entirely on which restaurants you want and how far in advance you book.

The Landscape

OpenTable — the largest platform, ~3,500 Canadian restaurants. Strong in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal. Integrates with your credit card for no-show fees. Interface is clunky but comprehensive.

Resy — smaller but premium-focused, ~800 Canadian restaurants. Much better UI. Popular with Michelin-starred and hip independent restaurants. Booking window varies wildly (some open 60 days out, some day-of only). Strong in major cities.

TheFork — European-owned, ~400 Canadian locations. Better international restaurant database. Offers discounts and loyalty rewards. Less adoption in Canada than the US.

Local Apps — Toronto has Bookshelf, Vancouver has some indie options. Montreal has higher adoption of local booking systems. Worth checking if you see a restaurant you like but it is not on OpenTable.

The Real Strategy

  1. Search the restaurant's website first — many boutique restaurants only take reservations through their own site or Instagram DM, NOT through third-party apps. Big chains (Milestones, Mott 32) rely on OpenTable.
  2. Install both OpenTable and Resy — availability differs significantly. The same restaurant might show availability on one app but not the other on the same day.
  3. Book 2-3 weeks ahead for weekends — popular brunch spots (especially in Toronto and Vancouver) fill up fast. Weekday brunches often have same-day availability.
  4. Check Resy first if you want trendy/new — newer restaurants beta on Resy before hitting OpenTable. OpenTable first if you want established spots.

Pro tip: Most apps show 'No Availability' when tables exist but require calling the restaurant directly. If you see a restaurant you love with no slots, call them at 11 AM on the day you want — cancellations happen constantly and restaurants often hold phone-only tables to bypass app fees.
