Fix a Slow, Overheating Laptop

The real problem: Slowness and overheating are usually the same issue — your CPU is throttling itself to prevent damage from heat. Fix the heat, fix the speed. Most people buy a new laptop when a $10 cleaning would have solved it.

🔍 Diagnose First (Free)

  1. Download HWMonitor (free) — check CPU temps. Under 80°C under load is healthy. Over 90°C = thermal emergency.
  2. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) → sort by CPU — kill any process eating 20%+ for no reason.
  3. Check Startup apps (Task Manager → Startup tab) and disable everything non-essential.

🧹 Fix #1: Clean the Dust (Most Common Cause)

  1. Power off, unplug, flip laptop over.
  2. Blast compressed air into all vents in short bursts — you may see dust clouds come out.
  3. For serious buildup, open the bottom panel and clean fans directly (Phillips screwdriver).

🔁 Fix #2: Software Cleanup

  1. Run Disk Cleanup or use CCleaner (free) — clear temp files, old updates, browser cache.
  2. Check for malware — Windows Defender full scan or Malwarebytes free scan.

  2. Remove old paste with isopropyl alcohol + lint-free cloth.
  3. Apply a pea-sized amount of new thermal paste to CPU center.
  4. Reseat heatsink evenly.

If the laptop is slow even at cool temps, RAM or SSD upgrade is often 10x faster and cheaper than a new machine. Adding an SSD to a laptop with a spinning hard drive is the single biggest speed upgrade possible.

Pro tip: Elevate the back of your laptop 2-3cm using a simple stand or even a pencil under the rear edge — this alone improves airflow and can drop temps by 5-10°C with zero cost.
