Captain America's story spans from 1943 to 2023 (in-universe), but the films jump around chronologically. Here is the order of events as they happen in the MCU timeline, not release order — this matters because the Multiverse Saga reshuffles everything.
The Timeline (In-Universe Order)
- 1943-1945: Captain America: The First Avenger — Steve Rogers is frozen in ice during WWII after stopping Red Skull. He wakes up in 2012.
- 2012: The Avengers — Steve wakes up. Loki invades Earth. This is his first mission with the modern Avengers.
- 2015: Captain America: The Winter Soldier — HYDRA is exposed within SHIELD. Bucky Barnes (the Winter Soldier) is revealed alive. Steve goes rogue.
- 2016: Captain America: Civil War — The Avengers split over the Sokovia Accords. Tony vs Steve. Steve becomes a fugitive. This is the turning point.
- 2018: Avengers: Infinity War — Steve leads the fight against Thanos. The snap happens. Half of all life disappears.
- 2023: Avengers: Endgame — The surviving Avengers time-travel to retrieve the Infinity Stones. Steve returns them but stays in the past (1949) and lives a full life with Peggy Carter. An elderly Steve appears in 2023 to pass the shield to Sam Wilson.
The Key Insight
Steve Rogers only ages from 1943-1945 (combat years) and 2012-2023 (11 years awake). He is biologically around 35 years old when he retires, but lived through nearly 80 years of history. His story is fundamentally about a man out of time trying to do the right thing even when the world has moved on.
