Edmonton International Airport has limited shopping compared to major hubs, but you have options both inside the terminal and in nearby areas. Here is what you need to know depending on your timeline and needs.
The airport has a small selection of retail: Hudson's Bay (main anchor), a few food vendors, Hudson News-style shop with magazines/snacks, and a pharmacy. Selection is limited and prices are 20-40% higher than outside the airport. Shop here only if you are already past security and forgot something critical (phone charger, medication, snacks for the flight).
Whyte Avenue (south of airport, 10-15 min drive) — densest shopping area near YEG. Home Depot, Walmart, London Drugs, Winners, multiple restaurants and cafes. Go here 30-45 min before heading to the airport if you need something specific at normal prices.
West Edmonton Mall (15-20 min drive) — largest mall in the region. 800+ stores including every department store, electronics, sporting goods, and dining. Good option if you have 2+ hours before your flight and want variety, but traffic can be unpredictable.
Downtown (10-15 min drive) — Jasper Avenue has retail and restaurants, but less selection than Whyte Ave or WEM.
Same three areas apply — Whyte Ave is closest. Uber/Lyft from the airport to any of these takes 15-25 minutes depending on traffic (rush hour 7-9am and 4-6pm is worst).
Pro tip: If you are catching a connecting flight or have a layover, do NOT leave the airport — security re-entry kills your time advantage. Grab snacks and electronics at Hudson's Bay or the news shop instead. If you have a 4+ hour layover, it is worth leaving for West Edmonton Mall or Whyte Ave, but plan your return time conservatively (allow 45 min including security).
