The True First Avenger in Marvel Comics

While Captain America is famously known as "The First Avenger" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he was not a founding member of the Avengers team in the comics. The team officially debuted in Avengers #1 in September 1963. The initial lineup was formed to combat Loki, who was manipulating the Hulk.

The actual founding members of the Avengers in the comics were:

  1. Iron Man (Tony Stark)
  2. Ant-Man (Hank Pym)
  3. Wasp (Janet van Dyne)
  4. Thor
  5. Hulk

Captain America joined the team later, in Avengers #4 (March 1964), after being discovered frozen in a block of ice and revived by the team. His historical significance as a World War II hero earned him the moniker "The First Avenger" within the Marvel Universe's timeline, but not as a founding member of the superhero group itself.

Pro tip: Many characters have held the mantle of Ant-Man and Captain America over the years. Hank Pym was the original Ant-Man and a founder. Steve Rogers was the original Captain America, but he joined the team after its initial formation.
