Cancel Forgotten Subscriptions Fast

Most people are paying for 3-5 subscriptions they've forgotten about — the average Canadian household wastes $50-100/month on unused recurring charges. Here's the fastest path to finding and killing them all.

Step 1 — Find Everything You're Paying For (15 minutes)

  1. Search your email for: "receipt", "invoice", "subscription", "billing", "your plan", "renewal" — sort by sender and look for company names you don't recognize.
  2. Check your credit card and bank statements — go back 2-3 months. Look for small recurring charges ($5-20) which are the easiest to miss.
  3. Check PayPal (if you use it) → Settings → Payments → Manage Automatic Payments. This is a graveyard of forgotten subscriptions.
  4. Check your phone — iPhone: App Store → Account → Subscriptions. Android: Google Play → Profile → Payments → Subscriptions.

Step 2 — Cancel Each One

  1. App subscriptions (Netflix, Spotify, etc.): Cancel directly in the app or their website under Account → Billing. Do NOT call — it's faster online.
  2. Gym memberships: Usually requires email or in-person cancellation. Send a written cancellation email and keep the confirmation.
  3. Trial subscriptions you forgot to cancel: Contact the company's live chat (faster than email). Most will refund the last charge if you ask.
  4. Stubborn companies: If they make it hard to cancel online (a dark pattern), use your bank's "dispute charge" or "block merchant" feature to stop future charges.

Step 3 — Prevent This From Happening Again

Pro tip: When cancelling, always screenshot or save the confirmation page/email. Some companies (especially gyms and software) will continue charging and claim they never received your cancellation — a timestamped screenshot is your proof for a chargeback.
