Speed Up a Slow Windows Laptop

The mistake most people make: buying a new laptop when a few free fixes would have solved everything. Follow this path — free first, then cheap upgrades only if needed. Most slow laptops are fixed at Stage 1 or 2.

Stage 1 — Free Software Fixes (Do These First)

  1. Disable startup programs: Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Startup tab → right-click anything non-essential → Disable. This is the #1 cause of slow boot times.
  2. Check for malware: Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Quick scan (built-in, free).
  3. Free up disk space: Search Disk Cleanup → check Temporary files, Recycle Bin, Windows Update Cleanup. If your C: drive is over 85% full, Windows slows to a crawl.
  4. Adjust Power Plan: Control Panel → Power Options → set to Balanced or High Performance (many laptops ship on Power Saver).
  5. Turn off visual effects: Search Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows → select Adjust for best performance.
  6. Run Windows Update: Pending updates can silently hog CPU in the background.

Stage 2 — Free Diagnostic Check

  1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) while slow — if CPU or RAM is constantly at 90–100%, you have identified the bottleneck.
  2. Download CrystalDiskInfo (free) to check your hard drive health — a failing HDD is a very common cause of sudden slowdowns.

Stage 3 — Cheap Hardware Upgrades (If Software Fixes Did Not Work)

Stage 4 — Nuclear Option

Pro tip: Before buying any hardware, go to crucial.com/store/advisor and enter your laptop model — it will tell you exactly what RAM and SSD is compatible, so you do not waste money buying the wrong parts.

What you need

Laptop DDR4 RAM 8GB

Essential if Task Manager shows RAM over 80% usage. Check crucial.com first to confirm your laptop accepts DDR4 vs DDR3.

$30-50
Laptop Stand

Ergonomic stand raises screen to eye level. Prevents neck strain.

Laptop Sleeve

Protective sleeve for transport. Get one with padding for drops.

2.5 inch SATA SSD 500GB

Essential if your laptop has an HDD — the single biggest speed upgrade possible. Boots Windows in under 15 seconds vs 2+ minutes on a spinning drive.

$55-80
Phillips Head Precision Screwdriver Set

Needed to open your laptop and swap the drive or RAM. Most laptops use small Phillips #0 or #1 screws.

$12-20
USB External Hard Drive

Before any upgrade or reinstall, back up your data. 1TB is sufficient for most users.

$55-80
SSD Cloning Cable USB to SATA

Lets you copy your entire existing drive to the new SSD without reinstalling Windows — much faster than a fresh install.

$15-25
USB-C Hub

Expand ports — HDMI, USB-A, SD card reader. Essential for modern laptops.

Wireless Mouse

External mouse is essential for productivity. Bluetooth for portability.
