Fix a Slow, Overheating Laptop

⚠️ This information may be outdated. For the latest, check the links below — they will show you what is current right now.

The real culprit is almost always the same combo: clogged vents + background processes eating CPU. Most people buy a new laptop when a $10 fix would have solved it. Work through these in order — free first.

Step 1 — Free Fixes (Do These First)

  1. Kill background processes: Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) → sort by CPU and RAM → kill anything you don't recognize or need. Browser tabs and apps like OneDrive/Teams are common offenders.
  2. Check startup programs: Task Manager → Startup tab → disable anything non-essential. This alone can cut boot time in half.
  3. Change power plan: Search 'Power Plan' → switch to Balanced (NOT High Performance unless plugged in always). High Performance mode generates excess heat.
  4. Update drivers: Outdated GPU/chipset drivers cause thermal mismanagement. Check Device Manager or manufacturer's site.
  5. Elevate the back edge: Even propping it up 2-3cm with a book dramatically improves airflow.

Step 2 — Cheap Fixes ($0–40)

  1. Blow out the vents: Dust buildup is the #1 cause of overheating. Use compressed air or an electric duster — blast into every vent opening. You will likely see visible dust clouds come out.
  2. Cooling pad: Adds active airflow underneath. Especially helpful for gaming or video work.

Step 3 — If Still Overheating (Laptop 3+ Years Old)

  1. Reapply thermal paste: The paste between the CPU and heatsink dries out over time, causing temperatures to spike 20–30°C higher than normal. This is the most impactful fix if everything else fails — often drops temps from 95°C to 65°C.
  2. RAM upgrade: If the laptop is slow but not overheating, insufficient RAM forces the system to use slow virtual memory. Check if you're maxing out RAM in Task Manager. 16GB is the modern baseline.
  3. Switch to an SSD: If you still have a spinning hard drive (HDD), replacing it with an SSD is the single biggest performance upgrade possible — 5–10x faster load times for ~$60–80.

How to Know What's Actually Wrong

Pro tip: If your laptop fan barely spins or makes grinding noises, the fan itself may be failing — not just clogged. A replacement fan runs $15–30 on Amazon and is usually a 20-minute swap. Ignoring it will eventually kill the CPU or motherboard.

What you need

Laptop Cooling Pad

Adds active airflow under the laptop. Essential if you use it on a desk for long sessions or gaming.

$25-45
DDR4 SO-DIMM Laptop RAM 16GB

Optional — only buy after confirming via Task Manager that you're consistently using 90%+ of current RAM. Check your laptop's exact spec before ordering.

$40-60
Laptop Cleaning Brush Kit

Soft anti-static brushes for cleaning dust off internals when you have the panel open. Prevents static damage better than cloths.

$8-15
Laptop Stand

Ergonomic stand raises screen to eye level. Prevents neck strain.

Laptop Sleeve

Protective sleeve for transport. Get one with padding for drops.

CPU Thermal Paste

Critical if laptop is 3+ years old. Arctic MX-6 or Noctua NT-H1 are top choices — can drop CPU temps by 20-30°C.

$9-14
SATA III 2.5" SSD 500GB

If you still have a hard drive, this upgrade transforms laptop speed more than any other single fix. Samsung 870 EVO or Crucial MX500 are reliable choices.

$60-80
Isopropyl Alcohol (90%+ Concentration)

For cleaning off old dried thermal paste before applying new. Must be 90%+ to avoid residue damage.

$8-12
Precision Screwdriver Set

Needed to open the laptop bottom panel safely. A basic set with Phillips and Torx heads covers 95% of laptops.

$12-20
USB-C Hub

Expand ports — HDMI, USB-A, SD card reader. Essential for modern laptops.

Wireless Mouse

External mouse is essential for productivity. Bluetooth for portability.
