Fix a Buzzing Light Switch

The insight most people miss: a buzzing switch is almost never the switch itself — it's usually a dimmer incompatibility with LED bulbs, a loose wire, or an overloaded switch. Identifying which one saves you from replacing parts you don't need.

Step 1 — Diagnose the Buzz Source

Step 2 — Free Fix First (Try This Before Buying Anything)

  1. Turn off the circuit breaker for that switch.
  2. Remove the cover plate and gently tug each wire at the switch terminals — a loose wire will pull free. Reattach firmly.
  3. If it's a dimmer, turn it to 100% — does the buzz stop? If yes, the dimmer is mismatched with your bulbs.
  4. Swap in a different LED bulb brand. Sometimes that alone eliminates the hum.

Step 3 — Dimmer Fix (Most Common Repair)

  1. Replace the old dimmer with an LED-rated dimmer switch (Lutron Caseta or Leviton are the standard). These have a much wider compatible load range.
  2. Check the bulb's packaging — it should say "dimmable." Non-dimmable LEDs will always buzz on a dimmer.

Step 4 — Standard Switch Fix

  1. If it's a plain on/off switch buzzing, the internal contacts are likely arcing/failing. Replace the switch — they cost $3-8 and take 10 minutes.
  2. If you see scorch marks, burning smell, or discoloration on the switch or wires: stop, do not use that circuit, call an electrician immediately.

⚠️ Safety: Always kill power at the breaker and confirm it's off with a non-contact voltage tester before touching any wires. In Canada, panel work and new circuits require a licensed electrician, but replacing a like-for-like switch is a homeowner-legal DIY job in most provinces.

Pro tip: If you're replacing a dimmer, check the Lutron compatibility list at lutron.com/en-US/pages/SupportCenter/support.aspx — not all LED bulbs work with all dimmers even if both are "LED-rated." Matching the exact bulb brand to the dimmer's compatibility list eliminates the buzz permanently.

What you need

Non-Contact Voltage Tester

Essential safety tool — confirms the power is actually off before you touch any wires. Do not skip this step.

$15-25
Lutron Caseta LED Dimmer Switch

The gold standard fix for buzzing dimmers — specifically engineered for LED compatibility. Eliminates buzz that generic dimmers cause with LEDs.

$45-60
Leviton LED Dimmer Switch

More affordable LED-rated dimmer alternative to Lutron. Works well with most LED bulbs — check compatibility list on box.

$18-30
Electrical Switch Single Pole

If it's a plain on/off switch that's buzzing, replace it — they fail over time and arcing contacts are a fire risk. Only $5-8.

$5-8
Klein Tools Screwdriver Set

You'll need a flathead and Phillips to remove the cover plate and swap the switch or tighten terminals.

$20-35
Electrical Tape

For wrapping any exposed wire connections after re-terminating. A safety basic every home should have.

$5-8
Dimmable A19 LED Bulb

If your current LEDs aren't labeled 'dimmable,' this is your cheapest fix — swap the bulb before replacing the dimmer.

$8-15
