Remove Tough Stains from Clothes

The rule most people break: heat sets stains permanently. Never put a stained item in the dryer or use hot water until the stain is fully gone. Cold water first, always.

Step 1 — Act Fast (First 5 Minutes)

  1. Blot (don't rub) with a clean cloth to absorb as much as possible.
  2. Rinse from the back of the fabric under cold running water — this pushes the stain out instead of deeper in.
  3. Do not scrub — it breaks fabric fibres and spreads the stain.

Step 2 — Identify Your Stain

Step 3 — Treat and Wash

  1. Apply your stain remover and let it penetrate for at least 5–10 minutes (don't let it dry on the fabric).
  2. Wash on the coolest cycle appropriate for the fabric.
  3. Check the stain before drying — if still visible, repeat the treatment. Drying = permanent.

Nuclear Option for White Fabrics

Mix oxygen bleach (OxiClean) with the hottest water safe for that fabric and soak for up to 6 hours. Never use chlorine bleach on anything with spandex, wool, or colour.

Pro tip: Keep a small spray bottle of 50/50 white vinegar and water in your laundry room. It neutralizes most fresh stains instantly, is safe for nearly every fabric, and costs almost nothing. Pre-treat within minutes of a spill and you'll rarely need anything stronger.

What you need

OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover Powder

Essential — oxygen-based cleaner that tackles protein, tannin, and set-in stains. Soak or add to wash. Safe for colours, unlike chlorine bleach.

$12-18
Spray 'n Wash Stain Remover Spray

Essential for pre-treating — spray directly on stain, wait 5 minutes, then wash. Great for everyday spills like food and grass.

$5-8
Tide Liquid Laundry Detergent with Enzymes

Use as both a pre-treater and wash detergent. Enzyme formula breaks down protein-based stains like blood, sweat, and food.

$15-25
Isopropyl Alcohol 99%

Essential for ink, dye, and marker stains. Higher concentration works faster. Blot outward from the center to avoid spreading.

$5-9
White Distilled Vinegar

Budget hero — neutralizes tannin stains (coffee, wine, juice) and deodorizes. Use straight or diluted 50/50 with water as a spray.

$3-5
Stain Removing Laundry Brush

Soft-bristle brush for working treatment into fabric fibres without damaging them — especially useful for grass and mud stains on denim.

$6-12
All-Purpose Cleaner

One cleaner for most surfaces. Reduces chemical clutter.

Spray Bottle

For diluting cleaners or making your own solutions.

Dawn Platinum Dish Soap

Best household degreaser for oil and grease stains — apply undiluted, work in gently, rinse cold. Cheaper than specialty degreasers and just as effective.

$4-7
Microfibre Cleaning Cloths

For blotting stains without scratching fabric. Better than paper towels which can leave residue. Reusable and washable.

$10-15
Microfiber Cloths

Reusable, streak-free cleaning. Better than paper towels for most jobs.
