Fix a Dishwasher That Won't Drain

The most common culprit is a clogged filter or drain hose — not a broken pump. Most people call a repair tech too early. 90% of dishwasher draining issues are DIY-fixable in under 30 minutes with no tools or cheap ones.

Step 1 — Check the Obvious First (Free, 2 min)

  1. Run your garbage disposal if you have one. The dishwasher drain connects to it — a full disposal blocks water from leaving.
  2. Make sure you ran a full cycle (partial cycles leave water pooled in the sump — that's normal).
  3. Check if the cycle was interrupted mid-run — reset it and run a rinse cycle.

Step 2 — Clean the Filter (Free, 10 min)

  1. Remove the bottom rack.
  2. Unscrew or twist out the cylindrical filter at the bottom of the tub.
  3. Rinse it under hot water, scrub with an old toothbrush and dish soap.
  4. Check the drain area beneath it for food debris, glass shards, or grease buildup — remove by hand or with paper towels.

Step 3 — Inspect the Drain Hose ($0–10, 15 min)

  1. Pull the dishwasher out slightly and locate the drain hose (runs from the pump to under the sink).
  2. Check for kinks or clogs — straighten any kinks.
  3. The hose must loop up high (a high loop or air gap) before connecting to the drain. If it doesn't, backflow blocks draining — this is a hidden install error in many homes.

Step 4 — Check the Air Gap (If Installed)

  1. The chrome cap on your sink countertop is an air gap — pop the top off and check for debris inside. Clean it out.

Step 5 — Test the Drain Pump ($0, 5 min)

  1. Run a short cycle and listen: do you hear the pump humming but no water moving? A humming pump that doesn't drain = likely a blockage at the pump impeller, not a dead pump.
  2. Reach into the sump (with gloves) and feel for debris caught in the impeller.
  3. No sound at all? The pump may be faulty — this is the point where a repair tech or part replacement makes sense.

When to Call a Pro

Pro tip: Run a cup of white vinegar on the bottom rack through a hot cycle monthly — it dissolves grease buildup in the filter and drain hose before it becomes a clog. This one habit eliminates 80% of future drain issues.
